The Aviary at Cunningham Falls State Park
|
Housed in the the Catoctin Mountains, located near Frederick, Maryland is Cunningham Falls State Park. The park gets its name from the 78 foot, not so picturesque, waterfall. This trip was planned not to see the waterfall, but to see the aviary. The aviary is home to some of the animals used in Maryland's educational "Scales and Tales" program. The program is charged with providing citizens, mostly children at their schools, a chance to experience nature up close. The birds are all wounded in some way and can never be released back into the wild. A ranger provided us with excellent, close up access that could never be had in the wild. It was an excellent experience that I hope to repeat next year. |
