Eastern State Penitentiary is located in the middle of a residential area in north Philadelphia, PA. This amazing structure opened in 1829 and was finally retired in 1971. It was once home to Al Capone and "The Cat Murdering Dog," Pep. Most the the prison is still in disrepair, but its place on the National Register of Historic Places provides some protection against demolition and there is an effort in place to continue to reopen areas of the prison. Only about 1/3 is available to tour. We found numerous photogenic subjects, but cut the shoot short due to the heat and humidity. |
