Trains, Mills, Barns, Amish and other random things
Lancaster County is home of the Pennsylvania Dutch community. They're well known for their avoidance of modern technology. It's not uncommon to see a horse drawn buggy holding up traffic. I only made a few images of the Amish due to most of the roads having no shoulder to pull over on. However, that didn't stop many other people. |

Strasburg, PA, located in central Lancaster County, is home to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and the Strasburg Rail Road. The museum houses a large collection of both steam and electric powered restored locomotives. It's a must see for any train lover. The Strasburg Railroad operates vintage steam powered locomotives on a short line that runs through some picturesque Amish farmland. I did not ride the train, but the many intersections and slow speed made it pretty easy to photograph. I've always been a fan of steam engines. |

Scattered throughout Lancaster County are tons of old mills, barns, cemeteries, churches, and other structures that make it a photographers dream. Like any other place, getting off the beaten path is the best way to find the real gems. Again harsh light and hazy skys hurt some of these images. I tried my best to make due with the conditions. Luckily I only live about 100 miles away, so day trips are always a possibility. |
