7-16-07): This little essay was written not only to fill in friends and family about the details of my most recent journey across the country, but also for me to look back on if I ever consider this type of trip again. All in all the drive was easier then I thought it would be. I knew it was going to be a tough day even before I hit the road. I overestimated the available space in my truck, so I was forced to leave some not so necessary items behind and also added a fair amount of weight to </w:t></w:r><w:r wsp:rsidR="00D01AF9"><w:t>my </w:t></w:r><w:r wsp:rsidR="00FC0C5D"><w:t>Ford Escape. There is a reason it’s cheap. A family of about 15 was taking pictures of each other around a tree in front of The Main Building (The Golden Dome).  They asked me to take one of the entire </w:t></w:r><w:proofErr w:type="gramStart"/><w:r wsp:rsidR="00FF1A31"><w:t>family</w:t></w:r><w:proofErr w:type="gramEnd"/><w:r wsp:rsidR="00FF1A31"><w:t>. Now that may not sound interesting, but </w:t></w:r><w:r><w:t>what </w:t></w:r><w:r wsp:rsidR="00FF1A31"><w:t>was interesting </w:t></w:r><w:r><w:t>was an</w:t></w:r><w:r wsp:rsidR="00FF1A31"><w:t> 8 to 10 year old boy that was apparently part of the group, but was sitting in a golf cart on the side </w:t></w:r><w:r><w:t>not participating in the pictures</w:t></w:r><w:r wsp:rsidR="00FF1A31"><w:t>. So when it came to the group picture they wanted me to take, they asked the kid to come over and get in the picture also. He quickly said “no” and folded his arms. His mother then walked over, grabbed him out of the cart kicking and screaming, and plopped him down on the ground in front of the group. I proceeded to take a shot of 15 or so smiling people and 1 crying brat. This is not a personal moment</w:t></w:r><w:r wsp:rsidR="00E16A8B"><w:t> I would </w:t></w:r><w:r><w:t>have chosen to preserve.</w:t></w:r></w:p><w:p wsp:rsidR="00E21C6C" wsp:rsidRDefault="00E21C6C" wsp:rsidP="00A13D57"/><w:p wsp:rsidR="00E16A8B" wsp:rsidRDefault="00E16A8B" wsp:rsidP="00A13D57"><w:r><w:t>Summary: I woke up to rain and dark clouds in </w:t></w:r><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>South Bend</w:t></w:r></st1:City></st1:place><w:r><w:t>. Not exactly what I had hoped for. I left the crappy Motel 6 at 9am and had a quick, average quality breakfast at a local spot. After breakfast, I headed to the College Football Hall of Fame. It was interesting, but there wasn’t much there. The entire exhibit could barely fill the lobby of the </w:t></w:r><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Smithsonian</w:t></w:r></st1:PlaceName><w:r><w:t> </w:t></w:r><st1:PlaceName w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Natural</w:t></w:r></st1:PlaceName><w:r><w:t> </w:t></w:r><st1:PlaceName w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>History</w:t></w:r></st1:PlaceName><w:r><w:t> </w:t></w:r><st1:PlaceType w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Museum</w:t></w:r></st1:PlaceType></st1:place><w:r><w:t>. After that, I decided to attempt a photo shoot at the University </w:t></w:r><w:proofErr w:type="gramStart"/><w:r><w:t>of</w:t></w:r><w:proofErr w:type="gramEnd"/><w:r><w:t> Notre Dame even though it was raining lightly</w:t></w:r><w:r wsp:rsidR="00B742D7"><w:t> figuring that it would be a one time opportunity to see my favorite college football team’s home campus</w:t></w:r><w:r><w:t>.</w:t></w:r><w:r wsp:rsidR="00B742D7"><w:t> I spent 2 hours wandering the amazing campus. I tried to convince some construction workers to let into to the football stadium, but it wasn’t to be.</w:t></w:r></w:p><w:p wsp:rsidR="00B742D7" wsp:rsidRDefault="00B742D7" wsp:rsidP="00A13D57"/><w:p wsp:rsidR="00B742D7" wsp:rsidRDefault="00B742D7" wsp:rsidP="00A13D57"><w:r><w:t>I hit the road at 12:30pm, another late day. This drive was far less eventful them Day 1. There was a bit of congestion around the </w:t></w:r><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Chicago</w:t></w:r></st1:City></st1:place><w:r><w:t> area that slowed me down, but other then that traffic was quite smooth. The rain during the f</w:t></w:r><w:r wsp:rsidR="00232C6D"><w:t>irst half of the drive resulted</w:t></w:r><w:r><w:t> in nothing more the reduced visibility</w:t></w:r><w:r wsp:rsidR="00232C6D"><w:t>.</w:t></w:r></w:p><w:p wsp:rsidR="00232C6D" wsp:rsidRDefault="00232C6D" wsp:rsidP="00A13D57"/><w:p wsp:rsidR="00232C6D" wsp:rsidRDefault="00232C6D" wsp:rsidP="00A13D57"><w:r><w:t>Today was also a good meal day. I stopped at a place called the Trapper’s Grill in western </w:t></w:r><st1:State w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Illinois</w:t></w:r></st1:State><w:r><w:t> just before I crossed into </w:t></w:r><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Iowa</w:t></w:r></st1:State></st1:place><w:r><w:t>. I had an excellent cup of chipotle chicken soup and a mushroom </w:t></w:r><w:proofErr w:type="spellStart"/><w:r><w:t>swiss</w:t></w:r><w:proofErr w:type="spellEnd"/><w:r><w:t> burger. For dinner, I order some delivery pizza from Nero’s in </w:t></w:r><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Lincoln</w:t></w:r></st1:City><w:r><w:t>, </w:t></w:r><st1:State w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>NE.</w:t></w:r></st1:State></st1:place><w:r><w:t> Their crust was decent, sauce was flavorful, and topping seemed to be good quality. I planned to be on the road for thirteen hours, but road construction added two hours to the day. Also at that time my back was really starting to bother me, so I made the bad decision of taking a </w:t></w:r><w:proofErr w:type="spellStart"/><w:r wsp:rsidR="0062291E"><w:t>Naprosyn</w:t></w:r><w:proofErr w:type="spellEnd"/><w:r wsp:rsidR="0062291E"><w:t>, my back pain killer of choice, which I’ve never experienced any side effects taking. Of course today was the day. Not more then 1 hour later I was feeling quite tired. The bad news is I still had what I thought was 6 hours of driving left. I had to make a few additional rest stops and drank multiple </w:t></w:r><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on"><w:r wsp:rsidR="0062291E"><w:t>Mt.</w:t></w:r></st1:PlaceType><w:r wsp:rsidR="0062291E"><w:t> </w:t></w:r><st1:PlaceName w:st="on"><w:r wsp:rsidR="0062291E"><w:t>Dews</w:t></w:r></st1:PlaceName></st1:place><w:r wsp:rsidR="0062291E"><w:t> to keep my driving from getting dangerous.</w:t></w:r></w:p><w:p wsp:rsidR="0062291E" wsp:rsidRDefault="0062291E" wsp:rsidP="004F7FE7"/><w:p wsp:rsidR="0062291E" wsp:rsidRDefault="0062291E" wsp:rsidP="004F7FE7"><w:r><w:t>It was again smooth sailing from </w:t></w:r><st1:City w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Cheyenne</w:t></w:r></st1:City><w:r><w:t> to just across the </w:t></w:r><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Utah</w:t></w:r></st1:State></st1:place><w:r><w:t> border, but that’s when I hit the real traffic jam. About 8 miles of road construction took an hour and a half to get through and this was at 10pm, so no crews where even at work. I never passed anything that could have caused the slow down other then merging issues when I-80 went from 2 to 1 lane. I finally ended the drive after descending a steep canyon on I-84. I expect it would have been a beautiful drive, but the sun had already gone down and the road was </w:t></w:r><w:proofErr w:type="gramStart"/><w:r><w:t>pitch</w:t></w:r><w:proofErr w:type="gramEnd"/><w:r><w:t> black.</w:t></w:r></w:p><w:p wsp:rsidR="00453E62" wsp:rsidRDefault="00453E62" wsp:rsidP="004F7FE7"/><w:p wsp:rsidR="00453E62" wsp:rsidRDefault="00453E62" wsp:rsidP="004F7FE7"><w:r><w:t>Night 2 and 3 have both been spent in Days Inns. Both have been positive experiences and have been quite inexpensive as well. Of course my day also started with some lovely traffic thanks to road construction. Road construction seems to be a main theme of this drive. However, once I got by that construction it was smooth sailing for hours until the next bout of construction just outside of </w:t></w:r><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on"><w:r wsp:rsidR="00973A5C"><w:t>Boise</w:t></w:r></st1:City><w:r wsp:rsidR="00973A5C"><w:t>, </w:t></w:r><st1:State w:st="on"><w:r wsp:rsidR="00973A5C"><w:t>ID.</w:t></w:r></st1:State></st1:place></w:p><w:p wsp:rsidR="00973A5C" wsp:rsidRDefault="00973A5C" wsp:rsidP="00453E62"/><w:p wsp:rsidR="00973A5C" wsp:rsidRDefault="00973A5C" wsp:rsidP="00453E62"><w:r><w:t>Another interesting occurrence on Day 4 was a dust storm. Apparently parts of </w:t></w:r><st1:State w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Idaho</w:t></w:r></st1:State><w:r><w:t> and eastern </w:t></w:r><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Oregon</w:t></w:r></st1:State></st1:place><w:r><w:t> h</w:t></w:r><w:r wsp:rsidR="00E72755"><w:t>ave a problem with dust storms. </w:t></w:r><w:r><w:t>The one I drove through in </w:t></w:r><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Idaho</w:t></w:r></st1:State></st1:place><w:r><w:t> was minor, but as one would imagine was simply a big cloud of brown floating across the highway.</w:t></w:r></w:p><w:p wsp:rsidR="00973A5C" wsp:rsidRDefault="00973A5C" wsp:rsidP="00453E62"/><w:p wsp:rsidR="00973A5C" wsp:rsidRDefault="00973A5C" wsp:rsidP="00453E62"><w:r><w:t>A magical moment of the Day for came as I rounded a bend on I-84 and </w:t></w:r><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Mt.</w:t></w:r></st1:PlaceType><w:r><w:t> </w:t></w:r><st1:PlaceName w:st="on"><w:r><w:t>Hood</w:t></w:r></st1:PlaceName></st1:place><w:r><w:t> came into view. I know the peak well having photographed it many times. I </w:t></w:r><w:r wsp:rsidR="003F0D4A"><w:t>had a big boost of energy which was well needed. About two and a half hours later I was home in Tigard.</w:t></w:r></w:p><w:p wsp:rsidR="003F0D4A" wsp:rsidRDefault="003F0D4A" wsp:rsidP="003F0D4A"/><w:p wsp:rsidR="003F0D4A" wsp:rsidRDefault="003F0D4A" wsp:rsidP="003F0D4A"><w:r><w:t>I never want to make this long drive again.
